What speed will trigger a speed camera in Spain?

Spain applies the so-called 7 tolerance policy. On roads with a speed limit of 90 km/h or less, the tolerance margin is 7 km/h. On roads with a speed limit of 100 km/h or 120 km/h, the radar tolerance is 7%. The operation of speed cameras in Spain is very similar to that of speed cameras in other European countries.

Spanish traffic authorities do not issue fines when the speed does not exceed the tolerance margins. For example, on a road with a speed limit of 50 km/h, a car travelling at 57 km/h will not be fined, but a fine will be imposed if the speed is 58 km/h.

The most common speed limits in Spain are:

  • 30 km/h on urban roads.
  • 90 km/h on national roads.
  • 120 km/h on motorways.

In the picture you can see the tolerance applied by the Spanish traffic authorities according to the speed limit of the road.

Radar detectors are illegal in Spain. Their use carries a fine of up to 6,000 euros, with no possibility of reduction.
