How to pay an Italian fine online

Traffic fines in Italy can be imposed by the Local Police, the Traffic Police or the Carabinieri, depending on where the offence takes place. For example, a fine for entering a ZTL without authorisation will be imposed by the Local Police, and a fine for speeding on the motorway will be imposed by the Traffic Police (Polizia Stradale). The way of paying the fine will differ depending on the authority issuing the fine.

The Italian authorities have 360 days to notify an offence when the offender is a non-resident of Italy. The deadline to pay a fine with a 30% discount in Italy is only five days.

Local Police Fines in Italy

The most frequent fines imposed by local police in cities are for parking offences, for not complying with the rules for accessing a Limited Traffic Zone (ZTL) or for failing to stop at a red light. Each city council has its own website to pay the fine. The information that must be provided is generally the Unique Payment Identifier (IUV), the vehicle registration number, and the date and time of the offence. Paying Italian Traffic Police fines

Italian bureaucracy is very strict, and paying a traffic fine will allow us to check this. If you receive a fine notification from the Traffic Police or Carabinieri and you want to pay it online, you have to follow these steps:

  1. Register at www.poste.it (an e-mail address and mobile phone number must be verified).
  2. Go to “Paga Online” and choose the option “Multe”.
  3. Select the authority imposing the fine (Carabinieri or Polizia Stradale).
  4. Enter all the requested data.
  5. Choose as payment method the bank card (VISA or MasterCard).
